A unique role
The Department of Justice (the Department) works to ensure that Canada’s justice system is as fair, accessible, and efficient as possible. In supporting the dual role of the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, the Department helps shape and uphold Canada’s legal framework. It develops policy, drafts and reforms laws, provides legal advice to the Government of Canada, and represents the government in court.
This mandate is carried out by a multidisciplinary workforce across regional offices and Headquarters, in close collaboration with other federal government departments and agencies. Legal professionals, including counsel, notaries, paralegals and legal assistants, draft legislation, advise on policies, manage legal risk, and help support decision-making across government. Their work is strengthened by colleagues in corporate and specialised functions, whose expertise helps foster a respectful, inclusive, and healthy workplace culture and enables the Department to effectively deliver on its mandate.
